Plein Air Painting

- Rixt Heerschop -

Rixt Heerschop I'm a storyteller. Every place I paint has a personality which holds a unique story within it. All I have to do is pay attention, to look carefully and to listen, and the subject will tell me what needs to be heard. Painting on location means far more than making a simple copy of that place; the sights and sounds, the smells, the bugs flying into my paint, the glare of the sun in my eyes – all these little things find their way into the piece to make a picture that’s truer than life.

You can click on the paintings on this page to read a bit about their story. All of them were made entirely on location, none of them came easy, but every one of them was worth it.

Some of these pieces are for sale. If you have any questions about the paintings or otherwise, feel free to contact me!

  • Plein air painting of flower salesman auctioning from a truck in Groningen

    30x40 cm, oil on canvas

My first experience with painting around the sea had me struggling with the retreating tide. The tidal difference here was around seven metres, and so I had to make sure to get the sea down before focusing on the cliffs later on. The seagulls circling the cliffs kept me company as I worked. Painting against the clock would be a running theme for me on this mini holiday, as the next day the tide caught me unawares while painting on the beach.

  • Plein air painting of flower salesman auctioning from a truck in Groningen

    24x30 cm, oil on canvas

The white cliffs of Cap Blanc Nez formed a gracious curve here that immediately drew my attention. With only little time left before the tide would come to cut my painting session short, I knew I had to focus on that first impression and keep it fresh.

  • Plein air painting of flower salesman auctioning from a truck in Groningen

18x24 cm, oil on canvas board

A small rock formation in Hortus Botanicus Haren recently provided a nice opportunity for me to explore some painting techniques with the palette knife. The knife was particularly well-suited for capturing the sharp jagged of the rock which are more difficult to achieve with the brush. Always fun to try out new techniques to see what will let me achieve the effect I want!

  • Plein air painting of flower salesman auctioning from a truck in Groningen

    30x40 cm, oil on canvas

The annual flowermarket in Groningen is a bustling affair, the city centre filled with salesmen and eager customers. I settled down to paint the lively scene of the salesman auctioning off his wares from the back of his truck as the crowd of people flocked to see the wide variety of flora.

  • Plein air painting of the Gardepoort in Groningen on a summer day

    24x30 cm, oil on canvas

My eye was caught by the warm bouncelight into the gate, giving the scene a certain warm luminescence. I love the atmosphere it created here, and quickly set out to capture just that. Unfortunately for me, the source of the bouncelight was the hot, glaring sun, which quickly found its way into the shady spot where I'd set up my easel. It wasn't a comfortable afternoon for me, but could go home pleased that the painting reflected the heat I felt while making it.

    30x40 cm, oil on canvas

The cliffs of Cap Blanc Nez were stunning and as soon as I saw them I knew I'd want to paint them from the beach. Given the tide however there was not much time for me to work on this location, and so I had to focus on what would make this painting special, and leave the sky and beach to play supporting roles.

  • Plein air painting of a canal in Vianen in autumn

    Canal in late Autumn

18x24 cm, oil on canvas panel

On a freezing November morning I set out to paint this quiet canal scene. The brown of the dead leaves provided a hint of color in an otherwise cold and almost somber landscape.

    24x30cm, oil on canvas

Past the village of La Vacarie lies a small hamlet known as L’Horte. Here winds a small road just wide enough for one car. The rock formations here were formed nearly 500 million years ago and occasionally yield fossils, providing us with a tantalizing glimpse into long bygone times.

    Source du Jaur

    24x30cm, oil on canvas

The pristine waters of the river Jaur emerge above ground in the village of St Pons de Thomières. In the sizzling heat of the French summer, the Source radiates coolness. The difference in temperature here is stark, and the atmosphere is mystical; it is no wonder that this has been regarded as a sacred place since prehistoric times.
